Submission Deadline: March 21, 2025, 11:59pm

Welcome to the 2025 Rappahannock Student Storytelling Contest website!

and thank you for your interest in telling your own story and sharing it with others. Submitting an entry to the contest follows an ancient and important tradition of storytelling that has informed, entertained, gathered, and connected people over the ages.

What is Foothills Forum?

A nonprofit, nonpartisan news organization working in partnership with the Rappahannock News (RN) with journalists and photographers who research and produce award-winning reporting. The two organizations are partners in creating a local newspaper that contains wide-ranging information and stories that readers need and want to know. They connect people in the community through reported events and common and newfound interests.

Why are they sponsoring this contest, together with the Rappahannock News?

The Storytelling Contest was started seven years ago for one important reason: to strengthen the younger generation's interest in and knowledge of why the stories in their own community - the important work journalists do - are valuable and should be told.

What better way to appreciate the importance of storytelling than to tell and share your own?

In the process of “finding” your story around the contest prompt and recording it in whatever form you choose, you may discover the special experience of sharing it with others.

What is different about the contest this year?

A focus on storytelling with a single prompt for everyone: “Tell a story about yourself or someone you know which involves an act of generosity, honesty, or kindness."

Eligible story forms include graphic storytelling with multiple frames rather than single drawings. Find the details of accepted story forms in Contest Rules and Guidelines.
